The Conference is the biennial discussion forum organised by the CIGRE Southern Africa Committee for members, associates and experts from Africa and developing economies.
This year the conference will be joined by the CIGRE SC B4 International Colloquium.
Conference Theme: Sustainable Integration of Distributed Energy Resources for Power System Development
Globally there has been an increase in the deployment of distributed energy resources (DER) in the form of renewable energy generation and microgrids. This technology presents a unique opportunity for power system development due to its low emissions, scalability, short construction time frames and diversifying the energy supply.
Grid integration of DER can present challenges, be it during planning, construction or operation. The conference will provide a platform to deliberate on sustainable integration of distributed energy resources for power system development. These discussions will be between electric utilities, system operators, regulators, manufacturers and suppliers, universities, standardizing bodies, research laboratories and authorities on topics in the field of development of electrical systems in Africa.
SC B4 Colloquium Theme: HVDC and FACTS for Regional Interconnections and Renewable Energy Integration
The aim of the 2019 CIGRE SC B4 International Colloquium is to provide a forum for discussion on the use of HVDC and FACTS considering the aspects of planning, available technology, projects and operational experience related to regional interconnectors and renewable energy integration with a focus on Africa. There is a need for regional integration of electricity networks in Africa. The installation of renewable is also increasing and these present challenges for planners and operators of networks.
The preferential topics reflect the above and the colloquium is intended to stimulate discussion on these important topics during the technical sessions. This event is held in conjunction with the 2019 CIGRE Southern African Regional Conference. SC B4 working group meetings will be held on the preceding weekend (28th-29th September) with the 2019 B4 study committee meeting taking place on the 30th of September 2019.
